After completing his theological studies at the Bible Institute of South Africa, and then Cape Town Baptist Seminary, Dirk pastored churches in Port Elizabeth and Durban before he was called to Grahamstown Baptist in 2002. He is married to Lara and has two adult children: Danica (married to Tim), and Jared. In his spare time he enjoys fixing things and wresting on the carpet with his son Jared.
Originally from Zimbabwe, Bryan is married to Camilla and has two small boys, Peter and Daniel. He did his theological studies at George Whitefield College, and has
served as the church's pastor since 2013. He main focus is on the student part of the congregation. When he is not trying to keep up with the students, Bryan enjoys watching sport (he is a long-suffering Stormers supporter),
reading theological books and making Dirk run on the squash court.

"When Jesus saw this, he was indignant. He said to them. "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these." Mark 10:14
Lord, let us as Sunday school teachers remember the work that you have done, first the work of redemption and then also all your works of grace and mercy in our lives. We pray for the children that they may see your glorious power. Lord our God let your favour be upon our Sunday school and be you the one who establishes and blesses everything we do. Whatever we do will only be of value if your favour rests upon us and if you establish our work. Amen.

Students in Grahamstown face a variety of pressures - the university is an increasingly secular space, where faith is frequently challenged and there are many temptations. Within this challenging environment students must inevitably make important decisions concerning lifestyle, relationships, careers and, ultimately, what they will believe and who they will serve.
As a church we recognise the tremendous importance of ministering to these young people during their formative years, and particularly as they find themselves at this critical juncture in their lives. We therefore place a great emphasis on our student ministry, and have employed a full-time student pastor since 2013. Our great desire is to reach students with the unchanging gospel of Jesus Christ, and to provide them with a firm biblical foundation and worldview that will equip them to follow Jesus and serve His Church faithfully for the rest of their lives, all to the glory of God. To this end we place a great emphasis on biblical teaching and exposition, Christ-centred fellowship, discipleship and mission.
Much of our student ministry on campus is carried out through "Isaiah 26:8", a registered student society on campus which is affiliated to the church (see the link to the society's facebook page on the left). Regular weekly activities for students include cell groups, prayer meetings and evangelism. In addition, we have two student camps per year, community outreach events and, from time to time, talks, seminars and workshops dealing with a variety of relevant issues. Students also play a vital and active role in the life of the Church, serving on the music team, teaching Sunday school, leading Friday night youth, and participating in Sunday services and mid-week ministries in a variety of other ways.
Should you wish to learn more, please don't hesitate to contact our student pastor, Bryan Marx.
The student society on Rhodes campus is called "Isaiah 26:8"
We chose this name because the verse Isaiah 26:8 expresses our desire to see God instilling within our students a passion for His name and His glory.

We have four weekly student cell groups which meet at different venues on and off campus in the evenings. Cell groups are a great opportunity for students to study the Bible and build Christ-centered relationships.

Our internship program is aimed at providing intensive training in gospel ministry. The program is designed to provide interns with biblical and theological training, whilst at the same time giving opportunity for hands-on experience and exposure to various aspects of church life and ministry.
The program is made up of the following basic components:
The program runs each year from 1 February to 30 November, and interns are expected to be fully self-funded. The church will, however, provide guidance with regard to budgeting and, where possible, assist in finding affordable accommodation in Grahamstown and ways to reduce living costs. Also, please note that at this stage we cannot take on more than two interns in any given year.
The program is designed to promote growth in Christian character and ministry. All applicants must be able to articulate a basic understanding of the gospel, have a consistent Christian witness and be involved with, and committed to, their own local church.
Application forms are available from the church office and can also be downloaded from our website. Please do not hesitate to contact us should you wish to know more.
